My favorite questions to ask students these days is What are you reading? Is it a good book for me to read? If the student is enjoying it, I'll usually get a short retell and will know that they would want more by that author. If they respond that "It's OK." I'll know to prompt them differently to find out what they will like reading. I did this immediately when I entered my new class. I interviewed each student so I have an idea of what they like to read. These students need to see that reading is fun! The only way to do that is by providing them with what they like to read. And by making a comfortable place for them to read these books. Please help!
