Research supports how critical it is that students are read to on a daily basis. It helps the students develop skills such a fluency, expression, comprehension, vocabulary, etc. The more our students are able to have opportunities to be read to, the stronger those skills become. Listening centers are such an excellent resource for the students to be able to have access to so that they may be able to listen to as many books as they would like. This is especially helpful to our developing readers who are unable to independently read higher leveled texts. When the students do not have an adult able to read to them during times such as literacy stations, they are limited to the number of times they are read to throughout the day. The listening center (CD player) changes that! They no longer need to rely on an adult to be read to! Not only do listening centers allow our developing readers to be read to without an adult, but they also have fun sounds and music that go along with the stories. As a result, the students truly love opportunities to listen to books on CD, and are highly engaged during this time!
