This year fifth-grade students at our school have been given the opportunity to visit Washington, DC on an overnight school field trip. They will visit scientific and historical museums and monuments over a three-day adventure across the city. The knowledge students will gain on this trip connects perfectly to fifth-grade common core standards, and provides highly beneficial experiential learning. We feel that all of our students deserve the chance to experience new places, expand their knowledge and connect classroom learning to real life experiences. Unfortunately, financial barriers prevent many of our students from being able to participate in these experiences. Across the county, many schools in higher income areas have participated in the sending their fifth-graders to Washington, DC year after year. However, as we are a Title 1 school, with 81% of our students receiving free/reduced lunch, we historically have not had the Washington, DC trip at our school as paying for the trip is a financial hardship for many of our parents. In an effort to increase the number of positive learning experiences and to promote equity for our students we would like to see each of our fifth-grade students have the same opportunity as thousands of other students across the county and attend this trip. This is a partial funding request, as the total cost of the trip exceeds the $1,200 budget. We are working with other local community resources as well. Please consider helping us to make our goal come true! Thank you!
