My students are hurricane survivors and competitors who cannot compete without laptops. As a school with multiple debate championships and many NSDA members, we have a culture of success in speech competitions. I am lucky enough to have three teams interested in competing but only 4 laptops that can support policy debate. Each team needs two computers in rounds and to prepare for competition. These two new requested computers will make debate possible for more students who have been impacted by poverty as they recover from Harvey. In the past, my students have been able to fill in the gap by fund-raising or home resources, but after losing weeks of instruction and parts of our campus to Hurricane Harvey, my students have had to contend with rebuilding at home as well as at school and resources are tight all around.
