Often students are given topics of study that they cannot connect to. Whether due to time or budget restraints, students often do not get a chance for deeper examination of just surface concepts. I'd like to offer my students an opportunity to learn about genetics and ecology by hatching chicken eggs! In order to do this we need an incubator. We can study pedigrees, dominant and recessive traits, and life cycles. At the end of the project the baby chicks will be adopted out to community members with backyard chicken coops. In addition, we'd also like to adopt a rabbit to care and raise as our own classroom pet, so we need a rabbit hutch and a water bottle. This project will help students gain knowledge, empathy, and responsibility through hands-on exploration of animals.
