We hope to enjoy the sunny weather in Southern California and expand and differentiate our learning environment. Outside of our classroom we have a newly poured, large concrete patio that would be a perfect space for learning with the right materials. This project was was conceived and developed by the fifth grade students in my classroom. They saw the opportunity to use our new space as a place where they can learn and explore in the sunshine. Students worked in collaborative teams to develop ideas for an outdoor learning space for all of the fifth grade students to use. They developed a vision statement for the kind of learning they would like to do, made a blueprint, researched materials and created a budget, and presented their ideas to the class. From the ideas and materials that they researched, I selected some that would best fit our space and needs. In their designs, my students included tables that can be easily folded and stored inside when necessary, stools that can be transported from inside to outside, lap desks that can be used on the floor and clipboards to hold their papers and provide a writing surface. The flexible seating and tables allow for collaboration among students. We hope to use these materials for group projects in social studies and science, as well as math investigations, and reading and writing. I would like to make their outdoor classroom designs come to fruition and give my students the opportunity to discover, explore and develop their ideas in a flexible, outdoor space.
