Our Student Support Team (social workers, counselors, & psychologists) is here to support students in their social and emotional development. A lot of life happens to even our youngest students. Children are not immune to big feelings or challenging life experience. We are here to help them learn, cope, & grow through their personal narratives. COVID-19 has not been kind to our school community. The impact of the virus has affected many of our students and staff through loss of loved ones. Our students are grieving the loss of primary caregivers, grand parents, aunts, uncles, & cousins. We know that hurt people hurt people and healed people heal people. Through this project, we hope to facilitate the emotional healing of our students and staff. We are committed to raising healed & whole young people in our school community - a community garden is one way we intend to do this. Through our project, we will use gardening in the following ways: (1) To commemorate important people we have lost to COVID-19, community violence, health inequity, natural causes of death, etc. (2) To collaborate with our grief counseling groups to helps students heal their hearts with their hands. (3) To implement other mindfulness based interventions with our students (i.e. to help regulate bodies, to practice calming down, etc.) (4) To celebrate student and community success.
