Reaching out to children with communication impairments requires a thoughtful, multimodal approach. With access to a variety of colorful, engaging materials, individualized to their strengths and needs, my students will have constant hands-on activities at the ready to stimulate interaction, maintain enthusiasm, and give them something to talk about! Impaired communicative function critically impacts cognitive and social development, and without a consistent means of expressing daily wants and needs through augmentative and alternative communication and assistive technology, developing young minds can become isolated and withdrawn. Providing systems of picture exchange grounded in evidence-based practice, access to knowledge of core words through digital and printed visual displays, voice-output devices, and specialized apps that instruct eager learners in targeted areas of speech and language, requires just a few key tools: a workhorse color printer and laminator to create low-tech, reusable flashcards, worksheets, and games, and a selection of high-quality, peer-reviewed apps that prove beneficial in speech therapy and are only available for use with an iPad running a recent IOS (not always feasible with the competing demands of a public school budget). The iPad prints directly to this printer, allowing therapy session results or unique core word board screen shots, tailored to individual students' working vocabulary, to be immediately printed to take home. Families can see their children's weekly progress, listen to recordings of their speech productions, and use core word board printouts to continue to support their children anywhere! This simple toolbox and a spirit of imagination can unlock the potential for my students to access education equitably, and express themselves as unique and cherished members of their communities.
