The classroom carpet is our hub for circle time, story time and whole group activities. We meet here often! Many students with Autism are highly sensitive to their environment. Specifically, my students are often hypersensitive to visual input. The visual part of our sensory system is responsible for processing the visual environment around us. The large classroom carpet affects the environment due to its size and color. Overstimulation can lead to meltdowns, self-injurious behaviors and inability to focus on a story or activity. Often times, my students will squint or cover their eyes to reduce stimulation. It is difficult for my students to "ignore" this overstimulation and regulate themselves during carpet time. The large neutral rug will provide a calm carpet area where students can enjoy stories and activities without the stress of overstimulation.
