Using a dictionary to find the meanings, parts of speech, and origin of words is a standard assessed on the State test. Unfortunately, the handful of old dictionaries I had in the classroom fell apart- the books actually came loose from the spines and the pages fell out. The students love to do the dictionary activities and find new words. I want to be able to offer them the opportunity to not only meet the standard on the State test, but also to actively engage in their learning. I want them to feel the accomplishment of finding answers on their own! My struggling readers, about 2/3 of my students, will greatly benefit from the interventions offered in the workbooks. They WANT to succeed! Students can use them during independent work time, working at their own pace, to catch up to grade level reading skills.
