Scholastic has non fiction guided reading book sets that teachers can use with students to build fluency, and background knowledge on a variety of topics. During small group instruction teachers can pull a group of 5-6 students and use these book sets to work on strategies and reading skills to improve comprehension and deepen students knowledge base on the various non fiction topics. The more a child reads, the more they learn, have exposure to and experience through their imagination. Building students schemas through reading also build vocabulary and gives students a window into other cultures and communities. Reading ability directly correlates to student self esteem, achievement and efficacy. We are building leaders of our communities and of the world around us. Reading is the key vehicle to seeing students reach their goals and dreams. Class libraries are spaces in the classroom that students can access, relax, imagine and pick up a good, great book of interest and explore the world around them.
