Morning tubs allow students the opportunity to settle in to their routine for the day through play-based learning. It allows students time to open up their minds by opening up their imaginations. This is an important process in the minds of these young 1st graders. The Lincoln logs, magnetic blocks, and other building supplies would be used in morning tubs to provide an exploration activity. Project designs could be offered to challenge students to build a in a set pattern, such as "build me a house that is 3 longs long x 10 logs high". Or students could just be given the task to build a rectangle house using the Lincoln Logs or another blocks set of their choice. Either way students are challenged to higher level thinking. Other supplies, such as craft sticks and sequins could be used in the same manner, except with other project designs, such as "design a new toy for Christmas" and describe how its used. Using morning tubs allows students to use critical thinking skills, but they think they are still playing. It's a win for both students & teachers! Using these resources students are not only exploring with K-nex or Linclon Logs, but they are also learning important social skills. Morning tubs provide students the chance to explore and create while learning to collaborate with others.By providing the option of morning tubs, I am hoping to also provide time to develop relationships that will build a stronger classroom community.
