The Harry Potter books will be used in a semester-long project to inspire students to read for fun! When I was in 5th grade, the first Harry Potter movie was in theaters. My amazing teacher at the time created a project for us to read the first book in class and take a field trip to see the movie in theaters. We then had discussions and an essay task to compare and contrast how books are different from the movies. Her inspirational lesson led a group of my friends and I from that class to continue reading the Harry Potter series well into high school and college. I hope to spark the same love of reading in my students.
Harry Potter books have the potential to spark an interest and passion for reading - they're legitimately magical books. I asked for 70 books because all of the books in my classroom are handed down from previous classes. Unfortunately, I feel like many of my students have never had the amazing opportunity to hold a brand new book in their hands in English class. My goal is to give students the opportunity to bring the books to and from school so they can read at home as well. There will be multiple, fun assignments associated with the novel study, but the end goal will be to compare and contrast the book with the movie. I'm hoping that this project will open my students' eyes to see that books are always better and more informative than movies - an especially important teaching moment in this tech-age! Thank you so much for your support!
