My students surprise and amaze me every day with their originality and ambition. Though many are from poor, minority backgrounds, they have proved themselves academically and have elected to further challenge themselves by taking my school's Advanced Placement Literature class. My school itself is in a poor urban neighborhood, but it employs a philosophy -- a successful one, I think -- of combining very high standards with very plentiful support structures. Students are presented with rigorous material, such as texts like Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye and Hamlet in my class. At the same time, there are support structures in place -- for example, many of my students come to after school tutoring, which goes into the evening every day. In part because so much money is put into these type of support programs, however, the school sometimes lacks for physical resources such as books. I would love to provide my students with this novel in order to further their intellectual ambitions.
