As a world literature class, our school's Honors Language Arts 10 course is meant to expose students to different types of texts from across the world, but for many years the course's reading list has almost exclusively featured European novels and plays. As a team, we the teachers of this course are working to change one text every year to broaden the cultural range and the types of texts that we study. The Motorcycle Diaries presents an opportunity for our students to examine a personal, non-fiction narrative as a form of literature while also considering what drives personal and social change. Ernesto "Che" Guevara writes about places and experiences that many of our students can relate to on a number of levels, while the writing and style itself offers many avenues for analysis. Moreover, the content of the text is ripe for inspiring opportunities for research and writing.
