When it’s time for circle time, a carpet is a fabulous destination spot and can serve as a great anchor. In my classroom, it’s a necessity! Our school is working on becoming an AVID school. In kindergarten, we are teaching organizational skills. This begins with students having a specific place in the classroom. In addition to having their on seat at a table, students must also have a consistent place at the carpet. Having a large rug would be extremely beneficial. Students won’t question where to sit, or spread out very far because the rug becomes the destination and the edges of the rug serve as a defined space for them to sit. We talk a lot in kindergarten about personal space. Understanding boundaries on the rug will help students learn to keep their bodies in their on carpet squares. In our classroom, we have a smart board that is able to act as a projector as it projects my computer screen for the class. I teach my students many whole group lessons on the carpet. Therefore, they need to be able to focus on me while keeping their bodies in their carpet squares. In the last several years, my class size has increased from approximately 17 students per year to approximately 25. Our previous carpet was not able to fit the amount of new students that are now consistently in my classroom. This new rug will accommodate my growing number of students. This rug is also important because of the emphasis placed on teaching students letters and sounds. I will be able to incorporate phonemic awareness activities based on the letters and pictures on the rug.
