This project is teaching integrated skills through the laundry! It allows the special education teacher to use a natural setting (our apartment) to teach academic skills, which then helps students apply these skills to their independent living needs. Lessons will include but not limited to: Sequencing, sorting, reading/listening skills, money management, time management, and motor skills are all areas of need for my special needs students and this project will provide the needed exposure, instruction and skill level adaptations. Sequencing: gathering the laundry and applying learned steps for washing (detergent, temperatures, cycles,.etc.), drying and folding Sorting: students will sort according to the classroom, material, and color Reading/listening: Students will read any specific instructions from teachers for washing/drying, students will develop/read and follow a laundry checklist (this could also include a braille checklist, picture list and/or tactile symbols), students will record daily activities. Money management: Students will be providing a laundry service to the school for a small internal fee (play money/credit/billing), students will learn accounting skills with billing for service, collecting money and learning how to do banking procedures and ensure a profit for the business (this will be for high school students) Time management: Students will develop a schedule for all classrooms in the school. This will include pick up/drop off times as well as managing the amount of time to perform the service. Motor skills: Students will learn organizational skills and will enhance the use of gross and fine motor skills
