I am interested in purchasing a class set of the novel Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo. I believe it is so important for the students who are struggling with reading to read things they identify with. The author is a Hispanic woman and when I casually mentioned this novel many students visibly expressed their interest. Representation is important, and I am happy to explore text from various cultures and demographics. I have seen how various authors evoke a passion for reading. Last year, we read The Hate U Give, and I have students who have left my classes because the love of reading commenced. They were able to test out of my class and flourish all their other classes by using the strategies that were taught with a novel they could identify with! Having reading options and choices can positively affect my students' work ethics and demeanor and hope that these additional options will help us grow even more!
