My students need access to contemporary reading material in the form of books. Penny Kittle's research on reading proves to educators that reading and writing both improve when students have freedom of choice and time dedicated to reading. Contemporary books like "The Hate You Give" and "Dear Martin bring teenagers to the forefront of social issues. Without access to contemporary literature through a variety of available books, students fall back to reading texts that are less than credible or do not read at all. The onus is on those of us who love reading to open doors for future readers. It is a societal imperative that educators allow students access to reading and reading choice.
