Our classroom lacks basic teacher supplies like calculators, anchor charts, pencils, a pencil sharpener, and a full classroom library with culturally relevant books. Filling my supply closet has been very costly on a teacher's salary, and it is not possible to ask students' families to help stock our classroom. There are a couple of teacher resources that will help me instruct with the unique needs of my students in mind. Many of my students are standard English language learners, and without a formal teacher's education, I have struggled to tailor my lessons to meet their needs. For example, I have chosen the book, The ELL Teacher's Toolbox: Hundreds of Practical Ideas to Support Your Students, to help me align my lessons with best practices for teaching English Language Arts, and ultimately to access the brilliance of my students. This semester, we are examining native languages through a human rights frame, and many of the books I have chosen will help kids connect historical traumas to their own experiences and community. Currently, our classroom library is very limited to castoffs from other teachers. My students would greatly benefit from having access to interesting and beautiful books in their classroom at various levels. The books I have chosen have native representation, authorship, and address the historical and contemporary traumas in an age appropriate format. For example, the book, Stolen Words is a narrative about the Boarding School Era's attempted cultural genocide and specifically its impact on indigenous languages. Beyond academic resources and supplies, my students need snacks like Goldfish in addition to the breakfast and lunch they receive at school. Kids learn best when they are well-fed and nourished, and my goal is to meet their basic needs so they can learn!
