In the last 10 years, there has been a dramatic decline in fine motor skills and literacy. I want to bring back the fun of learning by allowing my students to discover literacy (and early mathematics) through play! This is why I have selected a variety of learning puzzles focusing on early mathematical skills and early literacy skills. I have also requested letter beads for students to build their sight words using pipe cleaners. Along the same concepts, students will be able to manipulate a variety of objects (letter tiles, and unifix cubes) giving them the ability to explore, engage them, and encourage fine motor skill growth! Students need to be able to use their hands to develop fine motor skills before they can even make it to pencil and paper. I believe that through the use of these materials, my students will be able to develop a discovery-based approach to learning literacy and mathematical skills by playing in small group settings. These materials will be used to help students in many areas of their education. The most important part of these materials for me is that they will build a healthy relationship between my kids and their learning. I want them to see that learning is fun, and that they are capable, so that they can build their self-esteem and feel competent in their work. Many of my students need to be able to practice their cutting skills and we do not have a class set of scissors (our ratio is about 1:5). Providing scissors for my class will allow them to complete their work in a timely manner as well as sharpen their cutting abilities! Please help me to continue to engage my students and provide them with the materials they need to keep growing!
