I hope to increase my students' interest in reading and provide familiarity and comfort with books in their native language. Many of my students come with no English and feel lonely and isolated their first couple days and weeks. Diary of the Wimpy Kid and Captain Underpants are popular books that my students love to read, even those who don't enjoy reading. Students bond over these books and are eager to get their hands on them. When they see books and other items in the classroom that are in Spanish or resemble something from home, my students light up and feel more comfortable. I hope to ease the transition to the U.S. and make it more fun with the Spanish books I am requesting. Strong reading skills in their native language of Spanish can and will transfer over to English.
