Project Lit was founded by a high school English teacher in Nashville in 2016 who wanted to create a community of readers in his school by offering high quality, culturally relevant literature to his students. There are now more than 300 chapters in 40 states, and my students and I are starting one in our school! To get going, we need books. I narrowed down the choices, and my students voted for Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes as our first selection. Project Lit will provide a much needed after school activity, and will help create a culture of reading and leadership in our school. The group will be largely student run, with students recruiting community members and other school staff to join us, as well as writing the discussion questions that will guide the meeting. I hope that by offering my students opportunities to enjoy literature that is relevant to them, they will develop a love of reading that will aid them in high school and throughout life.
