Research shows that reading level is very closely correlated with academic success, as well as happiness, well-being, and job prospects. Because of this, I place a heavy emphasis on independent reading in my classroom. It's not reasonable, however, to expect students to spend hours reading texts that do not speak to their experiences. A culturally relevant classroom library is perhaps the key difference between students reading and growing and students falling behind. My school is rolling out a new Silent Sustained Reading program in the coming weeks, and I want to ensure that I have the materials necessary to capture my students' imagination. Just as I was enraptured by the works of Melville and Faulkner, I hope my students will be swept away by the prose of Reynolds, Woodson, and Ryan.
