I need students to understand that it's not that they hate reading, they just haven't read the right book. Too often students make presumptions on reading, because they've only ever read books that have been assigned to them in class. Books they are "made" to read. I want to open them up to books that speak the language of their world. Novels that offer a story they can relate to. I need to grow their love of reading. I need them to know there is a whole world of books, waiting for them. Telling their story. Understanding their struggles. Reading is needed. Reading is fundamental. Reading is not an option.
