Part of the Autism spectrum disorder is sensory processing disorder. Until sensory input is regulated, students have difficulty attending to academics. My project is to provide a variety of sensory regulating materials to the classroom. Some of the items I’ve selected for students include a light board with colorful shapes that children can move around to receive visual sensory input. I’ve also requested a reading hutch to help minimize noise and distractions and to provide a cozy corner for my children. For children with Autism spectrum disorder, learning is typically hands-on and supported through sensory engaging activities that the staff support with communication input. These requested items will be durable, sensory stimulating and will provide an appropriate and reinforcing outlet to enhance the unique sensory and learning needs of my students. Currently the classroom and school does not have a sensory room for any child needing a sensory diet.
