Language is only a little thing sitting on top of this huge ocean of movement." - Oliver Sacks It is essential for second graders to have as much movement as possible within their school day. For many years as a classroom teacher, I've had a stationary bicycle within my classroom. Not only does this provide additional movement opportunities for my students, but it also provides opportunities to build a positive classroom community. Each year, my class picks a destination. We calculate the miles needed to reach our destination and begin riding. Each member of the class takes turns riding, marking our current location on a map, and calculating how many miles are left to complete our trip. Along the way, students encourage each other while riding, get necessary movement, and work towards reaching our class goal. Once we reach our destination, we celebrate! One year we rode to Mackinac Island and put 252 miles on our bike. Another year we rode from Ann Arbor to Boulder, Colorado, and put 1242 miles on the bike! After all of these miles year after year, our bike has worn out and we are in need of a new one. Please help us reach our goal so that so that this movement, fun, collaboration, and exercise can remain part of classroom.
