"The Dictator's Handbook" is an excellent book that teaches about dictatorships thematically (use of foreign aid, when to crack down on protesters, etc.), rather than by country. Scores of references to past and present dictatorships can be found, with the idea that students will be applying themes learned in the book to the rule of Hitler, Mao, and Stalin. With these new books, students will be able to move beyond the theoretical, and dive into the practical. Students will also be expected to take a dictator from the book, research them, and compare and contrast with a dictator from one of our units of study. As IB History students, they are expected to be able to be internationally-minded and be open to different perspectives and ideas. This book is a great way for them to engage in critical analysis and connect to present, and become more engaged citizens.
