I teach a 7th grade math class. I am very set on not allowing the use of calculators unless the state standards encourage it. However, when my students are able to use a calculator, I prefer they have a great one to use. Currently in my class, when able to use calculators, my students must use a TI-108 calculator. That calculator is good for basic calculations, but no fractions or fractions within fractions. With a better quality calculator, my students won't have to worry about how to use it and can concentrate on learning math better. As my students get into the higher grades, the limits on calculators is not at strong. With using a scientific calculator now, they can be more at ease in the future to allow them more time to learn the material.
