These materials will help students answer two big science questions "Why do organisms look the way they do?" and "How is the Earth changing?" My students will use PTC strips to determine differences in traits (some people can taste the bitter PTC, while others cannot). With a foundation, my students will grow Wisconsin Fast Plants to determine which traits are inherited and which are acquired. These materials will help my middle-schoolers build models of inheritance based on their results. Students will argue from their own evidence how organisms can look the same on the outside but have different instructions on the inside. Additionally, students will collaborate to find and describe evidence for continental drift. Using the laminated seafloor map, students will build understanding from the fossil record, seafloor aging, and the fit of continents like a puzzle and combine their thinking with their classmates on the visual map. This map will anchor learning throughout the unit and give students a starting point during scientific discussions in class.
