For the last three years, I have been teaching K-sixth grade art at my school. Due to a budget shortfall, art has been cut and I will be transitioning back into the classroom. I am so excited to have my own kindergarten class! At the beginning of the school year, our K-second grade parents are only asked to provide gym shoes and a backpack for their child. After attending a required training for all Washington state kindergarten teachers, I realized that my incoming students need basic school supplies, STEM learning toys, and dramatic play materials to meet basic classroom needs and state objectives. I researched materials and educational toys extensively to find the best ones to meet requirements but that would also be enjoyable for the children. These materials will help students with fine and gross motor skills, math, science, literacy, visual arts, social-emotional development, and purposeful play. Stools will be used for our small group instruction table. Small storage bins will be used for each individual student's supplies. Large storage bins will be used for math center materials for students. Magnetic whiteboard markers and erasers will be used for both large and small group instruction. Pocket folders will be used as daily take-home folders. The microphone will be used with the students to increase engagement and confidence. Markers, crayons, and permanent markers will be used for art projects. Permanent markers and kindergartners actually do go together if they are taught how to use them properly. I never shy away from permanent markers with kindergartners. They are very capable of using them correctly to create amazingly detailed art! Finally, multi-cultural baby dolls, water beads, engineering city toys, and STEM toys will be used for multiple objectives in social-emotional learning, math, science, purposeful play, and fine and gross motor skills.
