Our students are meeting the author of the novel, Rikers High. We want our students to have the book and to have read the book, an engaging young adult novel that will capture our students' attention, before they meet Mr. Volponi in person in February. Our students struggle with gaps in literacy, and we desire to provide them with a book that will be relevant to them that we can use to increase their reading skills while increasing their reading stamina. We have structured lessons, games, activities, and assessments based on the book to prepare our students for their English I standardized state assessment which they must pass to graduate from high school.
