The lens for reading and writing in this unit is a topic that matters greatly to the young teens who enter my classroom every day. In middle school, many kinds of issues start to weigh more heavily on my students: relationships, school issues, disabilities and a growing awareness of larger societal pressures. "A driving force in this unit is the power of reading to transform how we see others." This year we would like to do Social Issues Book clubs. Social Issues Book clubs give students a chance to harness their natural knack for collaboration while channeling their focus through relatable books that speak to real issues going on in the world around them. Book clubs allow students to share a mutual experience of reading the same text at the same time and grapple with the real problems and concerns their true-to-life characters are facing. With these sets, students can read a few different books throughout the unit to push them forward in their reading level and provide deeper insight into multiple social issues individuals face throughout our world. The computer mice will help students take their reading to the next level--writing about reading. I have very old Chromebooks only occasionally available for my students to use. Unfortunately, the trackpads are broken on many at this point. Having a mouse available for student use on these old computers will give students more accessibility to technology so they can take their reading and writing to the next level.
