The materials and supplies I am requesting are things that I have needed for some time to better teach my students how electricity works.
I need to help them see how the basics of electricity work so we can talk about how they get applied in larger contexts and uses.
Fixing climate change means electrifying everything. For students to understand that, they need to know how electricity works! Students have told me that they are really interested in learning about climate change; by donating to this project you can help me teach them how we can use electricity to make a cleaner future.
I can lecture on how electricity works, but that doesn't work for students. I need them to cut wire, plug it in, connect it to power, do it wrong, fix it, and do it again. I need them to draw their own diagrams and do their own analyses on the boards. That's how they learn, and that's how they enjoy learning.
Every day in class, we work in small groups at vertical whiteboards and I burn through a tremendous number of markers. I have them work at vertical surfaces in small groups so they can discuss problems and I can give them immediate feedback. Being able to erase their work work is essential for building their confidence and frustration tolerance. It makes class a safe place to explore and make mistakes.
Thank you!
