My students in grades Pre-K through 5 work so hard in class. They come to my library wanting to recharge so they are ready to return to their daily lessons in reading, writing, math, social studies and science. After our library lesson or story and our book checkout, students are free to explore, create and invent at creative play centers throughout the library. In addition to providing centers that are related to current books or topics that we are working on, we also have centers that are open ended and allow students to create, invent and just simply play. The kiddos that are drawn to these centers are often the same students that are struggling academically and emotionally. It has been inspiring to see these disengaged students get excited about our building and imaginative play centers. Many of these students do not have access to these high quality toys anywhere outside of school. The increased demands on learning outcomes at earlier ages in the classroom, combined with demanding after-school schedules and increased screen times, has resulted in less time for creative play for our students. Libraries can be magical places. I believe that by creating a space where my students experience the magic of stories and the joy of creative inventive play will spark a love of literacy and curiosity that they will take with them long after they leave our elementary. Thank you for helping provide that gift to them!
