Many teachers are no longer using the traditional teaching method of, "I do, We do, and You do." Teachers are changing their styles by shifting to a, "You do, We do, and I do" Math Inquiry Approach to help students take initiative and ownership of their own learning and thinking. This style of teaching enables and empowers students to be in charge of their own thinking and reasoning, and encourages students to explain their thinking to their partner (peers), which sparks great discussions and conversations in the classroom. In Kindergarten, we check to see if students have a clear concept of number, rote counting, and 1:1 correspondence. Over the course of year(s) of teaching, I've learned that when students are given the flexibility and choice to choose their own math manipulatives to show their work, explain their reasoning (which is differentiation in itself), then students grow to be confident as mathematicians. We are requesting math manipulatives - Foam Ten Frames, Foam Five Frames, and Math Rekenrek - to help them explore their thinking, expand on their thinking and understanding of numbers. Also, students who have difficulty in understanding the concept of 5 and/or 10 are able to use math tools such as the math rekenrack, 5 frame and/or 10 frame counters to understand the concept of 5 and/or 10. My students will be so ecstatic to get their hands on these math manipulatives to explore their thinking.
