Creating voice and choice for my learners starts in a flexible classroom. Students are encouraged to sit where they feel not only comfortable but also engaged without distractions. My classroom runs very smoothly with centers-based learning. Allowing students the choice of where to sit or stand gives the student pride in their actions. As a second year classroom facilitator, my classroom has lacked the flexibility that my students deserve. Creating this new project will allow for many years of use and love.
The goal of my classroom is to create an environment that is fun yet engages the students in learning at their own pace. Learners in grades 7 and 8 will be invited to use the new flexible seating throughout the day. Tall round tables will encourage students to work independently or with a partner in a more secluded and personal area. The choice of sitting or standing at this area will also allow students the freedom to move as they work. Utilizing the furniture I currently have is also very important, but I trust that updated seating will give students the cool space they wish to work in. Students will utilize the short stools throughout the classroom for a learner-center space where choice is awarded and focus is the outcome.
The diverse group of learners in my classroom will not only benefit from this project being awarded, but also take great care and pride in their classroom. I have personally witnessed how choice and movement can positively affect students abilities in the classroom. This project being funded will only allow for more chances to grow.
