Have you ever had to ask someone to be quieter so that you can concentrate? Are there any foods that you just cannot stand? Maybe you have trouble sitting still without fidgeting? Would you rather spend time at Walmart or the wilderness? Everyone has a unique sensory profile. We are sensitive to some things, tune out others, and crave things that bring comfort. How do you deal with your sensory profile? Many of the students that I work with experience the world so intensely, that it interferes with their ability to function in and beyond the school environment. This disregulation can lead to maladaptive or "unexpected behaviors" that can interfere with at minimum learning ability and at times impact safety. The Sensation Station will be a structured space in my school where students can learn how to regulate themselves. Staff will be trained in sensory processing and emotional regulation protocols to guide the children’s access in the Sensation Station. They will become familiar with emotional regulation strategies that they can employ at school, as well as the outside world. Sensory processing rooms in schools are associated with positive neurological changes related to regulation and consequently, cognition (Champagne & Sayer, 2014). "The appropriate use of the multi-sensory environment provides experiential and alternative opportunities for de-escalation, empowerment, choice, increasing awareness, and skill development" (Champagne, 2003). So while the kids think they are playing, they are learning tools that can carry them through life.
