This year, I look forward to teaching my students through novel units. Our units will consist of themes that connect students to important times in our nation and world's history. Topics such as the American Revolution, the Holocaust, and the Great Depression are just a few time periods that students will learn more about through connections with characters in books. I want students to develop a love for reading! I want them to feel comfortable picking up a chapter book and diving in to learn more about something that interests them. As we read Number the Stars together as a class this year, I hope it will not only accomplish this but also develop an awareness in students for a time period they may not know much about. As they learn about the Holocaust, I hope students learn ways that they can make a difference in their own communities, ways to look out for others, and develop compassion for the vulnerable and hurting.
