My students are special ed students with learning disabilities, as well as several being second language learners too. They have a hard time with reading and writing because their disability interferes or they get confused with trying to incorporate English into the language they grew up with. When you throw in a learning disability such as ADHD and ADD, constant desire to fidget interferes with the learning process of a public school classroom setting. These motion chairs will help them focus and still be able to move around. All of my 25 students are identified with learning disability, and more than 58% of students receive a free or reduced price lunch at my school. My students learn best with when they are focused. Having these motion chairs will help my students focus their ability to learn and make academic progress. This will eventually help them obtain a high school diploma and prepare for their future. According to some within the ergonomics research community, sitting is complicated. Dr. Tim Springer is founder of the Human Environmental Research Organization (HERO, inc.) says that even when we “sit still,” our bodies are constantly moving. “The only truly effective way to maintain a seated posture for extended duration is to continuously cycle through a range of natural, centered and healthful positions.” Therefore, you can see that poor classroom furniture also impacts cognitive ergonomics, i.e., how our minds work and other mental processes. Examples include lack of attention, poor concentration, poor memory and lowered achievement levels. Please help me provide motion chairs to my students, who desperately need an outlet for their energy in order for their minds to be free to focus and learn.
