The purpose of math centers is to provide differentiated instruction so students develop their number sense and math skills at their appropriate level. We have started this year by completing math centers three times each week, and the students have been having a blast while learning! I have many materials such as unifix cubes, counters, base ten blocks, and other manipulatives to support hands on learning as the students work. In addition to this, they have been utilizing many games and activities that have been printed, laminated, and kept in folders or Ziploc bags. Although the students love all of the activities during math centers, our classroom is lacking organization that makes selecting games and manipulatives an easy process that does not take away from their learning time. With a new storage shelf, students will be able to clearly see all of the materials in order select what they need during regular instruction and during centers in order to maximize their learning time. This will also make cleaning up centers a more streamline process. When the materials are easier to take out and put away, they will not experience as much wear and tear so they will last longer. The other materials, such as the dice, 120 mat, and 120 pocket chart will be utilized in various centers to help students develop their number sense and practice new skills they learn throughout second grade. Dice are an essential component to many of the centers I already have in place. The pocket chart will provide opportunities for students to work collaboratively to build their number sense while learning about different ways that numbers can be expressed. The 120 mat game will further student understanding of number and operations in base ten. Students learn best through hands-on activities!
