When I ask my students at the beginning of each quarter what their favorite thing to do in physical education is, their answers are normally football, dodgeball, or volleyball. While those are all fun activities and games to play, those students fail to realize that they will not be able to play those games every day for the rest of their lives. At our school we have tennis courts within a one-minute walk from the gym. I would like to teach these students the fundamentals of tennis in hopes of them pursuing it as a lifetime activity. Leisure-time physical activities are proven to increase life expectancy by 5 years. Although sports such as football and volleyball are important to teach in a physical education classroom, I would like to teach a sport, like tennis, to reach those students who do not enjoy team sports as much as others. I believe it is also necessary for my students to learn sports that they can perform for their lifetime. Having this equipment will allow me to begin teaching tennis as part of my curriculum in PE. My students are looking forward to learning how to play tennis, in hopes of on day trying out for the tennis team!
