The materials requested for the speech and language room are materials that will allow sessions to flow efficiently and effectively. They will provide the opportunity for the speech therapy room to serve as a model for developing appropriate organization skills. An underlying goal for all who receive speech and language therapy is to gain independence in gathering and use of materials to make for a productive time during middle school and high school. For example, encouraging independence in gathering and handing in required materials for the classroom is a skill that can be fostered in a smaller environment in the speech room with hope for carry over into larger, content level classes. Use of folders/bins to organize papers, labels to differentiate, and a copier to allow for copies of beautiful classwork (so that both teachers and the speech therapist could proudly display work) would all foster a warm, collaborative learning environment.
