The 5th grade ELA program can really expand with the introduction of NEW and inspiring, quality literature! My students work on writing and vocabulary development on a daily basis. They are exposed to the very best in literature and specialized vocabulary through access to Newberry award-winners! When planning the reading curriculum, I try to match my students with characters from novels that are approximately the same chronological age, and are challenged by adversity! The novels I choose contain highly diversified main characters that come from all walks of life, because I want to see my students actively engaging through daily research, writing, and vocabulary development, in order to immerse themselves fully in literature, thereby pursuing a love of reading and writing, which is my ultimate goal as an English/Language Arts educator.
