By utilizing flexible seating in our classroom, my students will feel empowered by having choice and control over their learning environment. When students are uncomfortable, they become distracted and unproductive. Allowing them the choice of where to sit and having that spot be comfortable (cushions), or one that allows some movement (balance chairs) can help a student feel calm, stay focused and be more productive. The element of collaboration brought by flexible seating is amazing. Flexible choices allow students to quickly and easily pair up or work in small groups. Working on one of our laptops at a portable laptop desk can be great for small groups. By adding simple organizing elements with our laptop charging station and mesh organizer (and game chips) for math and reading games, students can quickly get materials needed, find a flexible seating location and begin learning. I have also seen an overall improvement in behavior. The flexible choices have created a feeling of ownership among the students and has drastically diminished behavior issues. Wherever students choose to sit, flexible seating has made my students more engaged, more enthusiastic about learning and they are having fun!
