Our reading curriculum is based on the Lucy Caulkins reading workshop model. Each unit is focused on helping guide students to become independent and enthusiastic readers, who can not only read their books alone share their thinking with a partner and discuss the deeper meaning of the text. At the beginning of the academic year, the goal is to immerse students in rich emergent storybook reading. These emergent storybooks are carefully selected texts that are introduced to students during read aloud and then shared with them to keep in their independent reading bags. Some requested titles include Kiss Good Night, Monkeys and Their Monkey Business, Caps for Sale, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Big Al, and Are You My Mother? Book selection is critical for emergent storybook reading as they should all have a sequential story line, clear illustrations that reflect the text, and have repetitive language that students can engage with. The theory in reading these emergent storybooks to students and then sharing them to be read in partnerships or independently is that when you are developing a love for reading children should never be given a book that you wouldn't want to read yourself! Using emergent storybook in private reading and partner work will increase our students' confidence, fluency, understanding of the concept of story, and help them to develop a deep love of reading. This life long love for reading we are hoping to develop will help our students become life long learners, too!
