At the beginning of the year, the entire 5th grade starts the year with teambuilding activities. One thing that we do is read a novel to help build a theme for learning throughout the school year. With the popular book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the 5th Grade can learn literary elements and use their imaginations to visualize the story in their minds. The students are very enthusiastic about Harry Potter, and even want to create a Harry Potter Club to create their own stories and plays to act out. Starting with the first novel of the Harry Potter series may encourage the students to continue read the rest of the series.
