These little children love to dive right into learning. Literally. They are happiest when they have messy hands and are exploring with multiple senses. I want to capitalize on that excitement for learning by using sensory tables as part of their learning environment. These tables can be filled with sand, water, or gel balls and be manipulated in many educational ways. They can form sand castles with the sand that sticks to itself, allowing them to manipulate and feel without creating a mess. The gel balls create a fun sensation, and the scoopers prepare their little hands for scissors work. Water can be moved about using the stacking bowls, and pours to watch flow. The alphabet letters can be retrieved from within the sensory materials. Having a sensory bin in the classroom and another outside can support a wide variety of academic skills. Oral language development is supported when students talk about what they are experiencing. Creativity and imagination are promoted with open ended play. Students learn about capacity, measurement, and volume by moving water and sand in different containers. It promotes fine motor skills as well as critical thinking skills.
