We believe young children grow and learn best when provided an age-appropriate, free choice environment. Here, students lead their learning. Teachers encourage learning by providing many opportunities and materials for development of new skills. When given appropriate materials children become scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. They learn about the world that surrounds them, and begin to explore a new way of doing things. While we have amazing materials for students indoors, we would also like to enable their creative minds while outdoors. The materials listed - a sand table, and different types of outdoor blocks - would allow students to explore their imagination. Blocks would provide excellent gross motor movement as well as encourage math skills (counting, comparing, exploring shapes). An outdoor sand table would provide opportunity for fine motor development and encourage social skills. These materials would enhance the opportunities our students have when playing outdoors.
