Learning a second language is hard, and at times intimidating. Do you know what makes it easier and enjoyable? Fun group activities such as Loco sentences (Relay Race) where they have to translate crazy sentences on the board using the magnetic strips to hold their sentence strips do! This cuts down on trying to tape it to the board or looking for magnets. The student favorite is Dictation Races where they have to decode and decipher paragraphs and need a dictionary to assist in translation. There is also Minuto Loco (Crazy Minute) where they will use the dry erase pockets to conjugate verbs, practice vocab, and translate phrases all in a minute and they can do it over and over again until they build fluency. This saves on worksheets and they are able to keep using it over and over again. The privacy partitions are for partner games and quizzing one another. The game showdown will be played with the vocabulary in the tubs and skits using the vocab pulled out of the tubs will be done in class. The Spanish board book collection will be used in acquisition through reading. They will partner read as well: a partner reads while the other partner translates in English, then vice versa. Having familiar stories helps and then they act it out in the Spanish language. My heart is for students to cultivate a love of Spanish. As they are learning a second language they realize that it's possible, doable, and (brace yourself) enjoyably exciting. I want to create an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and has visuals such as posters, bulletin boards, signs in the target language, all things that ease learning and sparks curiosity and engagement.
